Families receive second tranche of post-Idai subsidy

Famílias recebem segunda tranche de subsídio pós-Idai

The National Institute of Social Action (INAS) will begin paying the second tranche of the special subsidy intended for 32,000 vulnerable families who were victims of the 2019 Cyclone Idaithe organization announced.

The subsidy of 15,000 meticais was divided into two parts, one delivered to the beneficiaries in 2020 and another to be delivered in the coming days, said Abdul Razak, INAS delegate in the city of Beira, center of the country, quoted today by the newspaper Notícias.

According to that person, there are lists posted in the neighborhoods with the names and delivery procedures to avoid crowds and thus prevent the spread of covid-19.

Families who have not withdrawn the first installment of the subsidy can now withdraw it in full, he added.

In August 2020, payment was suspended for a week due to large crowds at delivery sites, raising the risk of spreading covid-19 and ineligible people taking advantage of the confusion to receive aid improperly.

But the suspension of the subsidy payment angered hundreds of beneficiaries, who rioted in front of the Sofala province governor's office until delivery was resumed.

Cyclone Idai hit the center of the country in March 2019, caused 604 deaths and 1.8 million people were affected.

It was one of the deadliest cyclones on record in the southern hemisphere, with high winds and flooding whose social and economic damage is still being felt today.
