Billionaire baseball family makes bid to buy Chelsea FC

Família bilionária do basebol lança proposta para comprar o Chelsea FC

The owners of the American baseball club, Chicago Cubs, announced on Wednesday their intention to buy England's Chelsea Football Club, owned by Russian multi-billionaire, Roman Abramovich.

The Ricketts family and billionaire and Citadel founder Ken Griffin have teamed up and now they are the group that will release today the amount of the bid to compare Chelsea FC.

The Ricketts family will lead the investment group, and Ken Griffin will join the business with equity, meaning that the Citadel company will be out of the deal.

"As long-time operators of an iconic professional sports team, the Ricketts family and its partners understand the importance of investing for success on the field while respecting the traditions of the club, the fans and the community," Reuters writes quoting a statement from the Ricketts family published by the BBC.

Chelsea was initially put up for sale by its owner Roman Abramovich after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, before the British government imposed sanctions on the Russian oligarch.

European Champions currently operates under a special license and is now effectively controlled by the British government.

Abramovich bought the club in 2003 for $183.16 million. His investment resulted in the most successful era in their history, as they won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups and the Champions League twice.

Chelsea is ranked by Forbes as the seventh most valuable club in world soccer with $3.2 billion.
