Facebook and Instagram plan AI-generated users on their platforms

Facebook e Instagram planeiam utilizadores gerados por IA nas suas plataformas

Meta plans to populate its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, with AI-powered personas, complete with their own profile pictures, biographies and the ability to create and share content.

According to a MarketeerThese virtual users will emerge from Meta's AI Studio, where humans can design and customize AI characters for cross-platform interaction.

Although AI Studio has already generated hundreds of thousands of AI characters, the company plans to expand its availability globally, prioritizing social integration over the next two years. Connor Hayes, vice president of product for generative AI at Meta, told Financial Times that "the aim is to make these interactions seem natural and dynamic".

However, the introduction of AI profiles raises concerns about the spread of misinformation and the impact on content quality. To address these issues, Meta has committed to labeling all AI-generated content to provide transparency for its three billion users worldwide.

This development has also revived discussions about the "Theory of the Dead Internet", which posits that a significant part of online activity is conducted by bots rather than humans. With the growing presence of AI-generated profiles, many may fear that the boundaries between human and automated interactions could become increasingly blurred.
