EDM announces "blackout" in almost all the country's provinces this Sunday

EDM anuncia “apagão” quase em todas províncias do País este domingo

Eight of Mozambique's 11 provinces, including the country's capital, will be without electricity for at least ten hours this Sunday, due to preventive maintenance work on the national grid's infrastructure, the state-owned Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) has announced.

According to a press release, EDM reports that the "blackout" will affect districts in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane (South), Sofala, Zambézia (Center), Nampula, Niassa and Cabo Delgado, in the northern region.

"For precautionary purposes, all electrical installations should be considered to be permanently live," the statement reads.

The power cut is intended to make way for the Annual Preventive Maintenance Plan for EDM and Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB).

EDM is the Mozambican state company that distributes electricity from the public grid and HCB is in charge of production at the Cahora Bassa dam.

EDM clarifies that there will be no general cut

EDM clarifies that this is not a general power cut, but rather areas that may suffer cuts throughout the country.

This Saturday, the company reacted with a statement clarifying that the nationwide cuts this Sunday will not be for everyone.

According to EDM, "this type of communication to large industrial customers aims to minimize the impact of the power cut". In the same note, the public company adds that: The interruption of the electricity supply to make way for technical work does not imply a cut in general, except in the places previously indicated, according to the Cutting Plan already in Circulation.

According to Electricidade de Moçambique's outage plan, this Sunday only some areas in the south and north of the country will be affected. In the center, the cuts will be registered in some regions of Sofala and Zambézia.
