The Chinese company DH Mining Development Limited is investing more than 1.9 billion meticais, equivalent to 29.4 million dollars, in graphite production operations at the Muichi mine in the Napepe district of Niassa..
This is the first ore processing plant in the province, and work began on May 5th.
According to the local authorities, the project has an initial production capacity of 100,000 tons per year, which is expected to double once the second line is completed, highlighting the expectation of increased employment in the district, which has around 56,000 inhabitants.
"It's been a long wait, but the day has come. The project has come about to give hope to Mozambicans and increase jobs for the residents of that area, avoiding conflicts as we have seen in other exploration sites," said the administrator of the Nipepe district, Sérgio Igua.
He said that in order to facilitate the process of exporting graphite, DH Mining Development is going ahead with its transportation by land between Nipepe and the Port of Nacala, in Nampula province, and then by sea.
According to projections, the Muichi mine has estimated reserves of 8 million tons and its exploitation is part of a government effort to increase graphite production in Mozambique. In addition to the graphite mine, the Muichi area also has a hydroelectric project, which is currently being implemented, with the aim of providing energy for local communities and the industrial sector.
