Citizen arrested on human trafficking charges

Detida cidadã indiciada de tráficos de seres humanos

50-year-old woman arrested by police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM)  accused of human trafficking in the city of Maputo.

The citizen was arrested when she was trying to sell one of her stepchildren for 350,000 meticais for allegedly having constant arguments with the 29-year-old, according to AIM.

The attempt to sell the young man was foiled by the PRM who, after learning about it through anonymous sources, instructed a citizen who posed as the victim's buyer to neutralize the suspect.

"This work was carried out in the area of the 6th Police Station of the Maputo City PRM, in the neighborhood of Malhangalene "B", where a 50-year-old woman was arrested. She wanted to sell her three stepchildren, but the oldest was 29 years old," said the spokesperson for the PRM in Maputo City, Marta Pereira, at a press conference held yesterday (04) in Maputo.

The source explained that the accused had contacted some neighbors to help her find a buyer for her stepson because she was fed up with constant fights and found a way to get rid of the young man.

The accused says that she thought about selling her stepson because he was mistreated by the victim, because she doesn't agree with the accused's relationship with his father and that she was aware that she wouldn't be able to sell the victim, but just wanted a way out of the situation she was in
