South African Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has called for a temporary halt to the transportation of miners by truck to the Lebombo border post, which is operating under conditions.
During her visit to the Lebombo outpost on Monday, Barbara Creecy said she saw a long queue of trucks, more than 20 kilometers long, and that the drivers were without the minimum food and hygiene conditions, according to Rádio Moçambique.
She confirmed that from the early hours of Sunday until yesterday, no cargo trucks had crossed into Mozambican territory, due to the blocking of several roads as part of the post-election protests.
Still quoted by the same source, Creecy added that the Border Management Authority is waiting for indications from the Mozambican authorities to determine when full operations can resume at the Lebombo border post.
"The closure of the border post has a huge impact on the mining sector. I saw a queue of about twenty kilometers of cargo trucks heading towards the Lebombo post. The drivers are facing problems with a lack of food, water and places for physiological needs.
We had a meeting with the Transporters' Association and appealed to them to delay sending trucks until we have information from our counterpart in Mozambique about when the border will be open," he said.
Figures shared by the Road Freight Association indicate that the disruptions at the Lebombo border crossing last month resulted in losses of approximately 5 billion rand.
