UN Security Council does not reflect the world's current needs, says Angolan President

Conselho de Segurança da ONU não reflecte as necessidades actuais do mundo, diz Presidente de Angola

The President of Angola, João Lourenço, today in Luanda, called for the implementation of structural reforms in the United Nations Security Council, as they are out of step with the needs of the various quadrants of a world increasingly in armed conflict.

“The United Nations is proving powerless to help impose order and confront the excesses of the great powers. We firmly defend multilateralism because it is the only model that is inclusive and capable of bringing together all the nations of our planet to tackle the major issues that afflict this contemporary world in which we live. We defend the need to reform the United Nations system, particularly its Security Council, because it no longer reflects the reality of the balance of power and the geopolitical, demographic and economic development of the regions of the planet,” he said.

Speaking at the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of National Independence, the Angolan Head of State said he was “concerned” about the war situations on the African continent, especially the rise of movements seeking to overthrow regimes established by the people and terrorists.

Lourenço called for respect for the peaceful resolution of conflicts through negotiation, strict compliance with the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law, advocating an end to the Russian-Ukrainian war, and in the Middle East for the creation of the State of Palestine.

“We are concerned about the rise and proliferation of terrorist groups in certain parts of our planet and in Africa in particular,” he said.
