A 27-year-old man went blind after using soap and urine to wash his eyes. He had contracted hemorrhagic conjunctivitis for the second time.

The young man said that after using soap and urine, he resorted to using traditional medicines to get rid of the conjunctivitis. By the time he went to the hospital, he was already blind.

Cited by STVHe said that in his neighborhood it's common for people to use urine in an attempt to eliminate the disease. "When he told me that, I followed him too. That's where the problem started".

As she tells it, she was given the same medication twice in hospital. And when he was then given an ointment to apply to his eyes, his vision was already fading.

"After three visits to the general hospital and unsuccessful attempts at treatment with ophthalmic ointments, the patient took a desperate measure by applying urine to his eyes. Unfortunately, doctors have now confirmed that he has permanently lost his sight," wrote the Quelimane Central Hospital on Facebook.

"Initially he had hemorrhagic conjunctivitis. But due to the use of traditional medicines and some other substances that have not been scientifically proven, it turned into bacterial conjunctivitis and this itself developed into blindness," explained Eugénia Cavele, spokesperson for Quelimane Central Hospital.

She appealed to the population not to administer medicines without scientific proof, and to avoid self-medication.
