Poisoned pork in circulation, health authority warns

Circula carne de porco envenenada, alerta autoridade de saúde

The district of Mocuba, in Zambezia province, is on high alert to prevent the consumption of pork circulating in the city.

The warning comes from the District Health Service, which says that there is a wave of theft of pigs using poisons in the village of Horrua, which can have an immediate or delayed reaction on the human body.

"This is a serious public health problem. It's an attack on public health. The poison being used is unknown and can create complications. There is a poison that creates complications in the short term, after consumption, and there is another that takes longer to trigger them," said the Head of Public Health at the District Health Service, Ana Pinto Moreira.

A team from various agencies will be going into the field to identify the type of poison used to kill stolen pigs and put their meat on the markets.

"You can't be sure what kind of poison it is, and there will always be complications. We have to discourage it as much as possible. Of course it's difficult now, but we have to work hard because demand is higher and people will always buy that meat. Sellers can also choose to sell the meat at low prices in order to attract more customers," he said.

In this sense, the appeal is for the population not to consume pork bought in local markets due to the possibility of it being poisoned.

"We must take precautions, discourage the consumption of our own meat. We must work hard to get out of this situation," he urged. (Source: RM)
