Cabo Delgado exceeds tax revenue target despite instability

Cabo Delgado ultrapassou meta de receitas fiscais apesar da instabilidade

The northern province of Cabo Delgado exceeded its tax revenue target for the first half of the year by 100 million meticais, despite the war ravaging part of the territory, announced the Tax Authority (AT).

The delegate of the AT in Cabo Delgado province, Helmano Nhatitima, said on Friday to STV that revenue collection reached 2.3 billion meticais, from January to June this year.

For that period, the tax office had projected maximum revenues of 2.2 billion meticais, Nhatitima added.

The business of extracting rubies and other precious stones guaranteed the largest share of revenues that Cabo Delgado collected in the first six months, continued the delegate of the TA in the province.

Helmano Nhatitima said that the gains registered in the first semester do not include the areas affected by armed violence, since fiscal activity was totally paralyzed in these areas, located north of Cabo Delgado.

Armed groups have terrorized Cabo Delgado province since 2017, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
