Last year, the Mozambican authorities seized more than 4,000 tons of drugs from around the world.
Of this total, around 2,000 tons are cocaine, 1,800 tons of cannabis sativa and 467 kilograms of mentafetamine, according to Notícias.
In June and November alone, for example, the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) seized more than 1.5 thousand tons and 500 kilograms of cocaine from Brazil and India at Maputo International Airport and Maputo Port, disguised as sweets and construction material, respectively.
The data was shared recently in Nampula at the National Planning Meeting of the Central Office for the Prevention and Fight against Drugs, led by the Secretary of State for this part of the country, Plácido Pereira, whose aim was to assess the degree of compliance with the recommendations issued and to draw up strategies for the current year.
The spokesperson for the meeting, Inácio Viniche, said that the cities of Maputo, Beira and Nampula are used as corridors for the trafficking and consumption of drugs produced abroad, such as cocaine, heroin and amphetamines, among others.
He also said that in the year in question 23,000 patients received care or treatment for mental and behavioral disorders, an increase of more than 7,000 cases compared to 2023, when 16,000 were assisted.
The Secretary of State, Plácido Pereira, said that drug trafficking and consumption in society have an intrinsic relationship with crime, social instability and family conflicts, as they contribute to physical problems and behavioral changes.
That's why it advocates greater and better investment and coordination of prevention and combat actions, with an impact on communities, especially teenagers and young people, the groups most affected by this disease.
