António Costa awarded UNESCO peace prize in Ivory Coast

The President of the European Council, António Costa, will receive the Félix Houphouet-Boigny Peace Prize in Abidjan today. UNESCO, was released this Wednesday.

In Abidjan, Costa will meet with the President of Côte d'Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara, to discuss bilateral relations, regional stability and preparations for the next summit between the two countries. European Union (EU) and the African UnionThis is scheduled for the end of this year.

Strengthening the EU-Côte d'Ivoire partnership in key areas such as economic development, regional security and democratic governance should also be addressed.

The EU is Côte d'Ivoire's main economic partner, investor and donor, with more than two billion euros in support, notably through the Global Gateway and specific Team Europe initiatives.

In a statement, the former Portuguese Prime Minister stressed that the award "is not a reward, but a renewed call to action", adding that "Europe and Africa have a shared responsibility in promoting peace, protecting human rights and defending the principles of multilateralism".

The leader of the European Council will donate the financial value of the prize to an organization "whose action is in line with the values of solidarity and dignity that it represents".

Named in honor of the first Ivorian head of state, the award honors individuals or institutions that have made a significant contribution to the cause of peace.

António Costa was awarded the prize on October 7, 2024 and will receive it on Thursday during an official ceremony organized by UNESCO in Abidjan. (Text: SIC)
