The Mozambican Association for Victims of Road Insecurity (AMVIRO) is calling on the state to adopt tough measures against motorists involved in road accidents. Last week, three road accidents resulted in the deaths of 35 people in the southern provinces of Gaza and Maputo.
As a measure, the Executive announced the suspension of the agents assigned to the traffic checkpoints where the passenger transports involved in the accident passed and who were working at the time. However, the decision is insufficient for the president of the Mozambican Association for Victims of Road Insecurity, ANVIRO, Alexandre Nhampossa.
"We need to take action, investigate and hold people accountable. Sometimes suspensions mean 'take from here to put somewhere else'. So there can't be this kind of cosmetic suspension."
Cited by RFIAlexandre Nhampossa argues that only the application of exemplary measures against drivers involved in road accidents can serve as an example and effectively contribute to reducing the number of accidents and victims.
"There are many situations where we really have to tighten the noose. The state has to come out with a 'tough hand' if we really want different and better figures."
The traffic police and the National Road Transport Institute (INATRO) have announced that they will be stepping up enforcement measures on the roads to prevent accidents and the Attorney General of Mozambique has defended the criminal liability of the people involved in the three accidents.
