Amazon launches online shopping service in South Africa

Amazon lança serviço de compras online na África do Sul

Amazon has just launched its online shopping service in South Africa today, challenging a number of online retailers dominated by Naspers.

Analysts believe that Amazon's entry into Africa's most developed economy is a strategy to take advantage of the country's development potential and expand to others on the continent.

The launch of its service comes at a time when South Africa has seen a sharp increase in online shopping, after the covid-19 pandemic created an opportunity for e-commerce to take hold, with retailers doubling their investments in response.

In a statement, Amazon said it will deliver its products the same day and the next day to more than 3,000 collection points. Buyers will be entitled to free delivery on their first orders, followed by free delivery for subsequent orders over 500 rand.
