Maragra sugar mill resumes sugar cane production with support from competitor

The Maragra sugar factory has resumed production of sugar cane after a year's halt. For the time being, the first productions will be processed at its sugar competitor in Xinavane.

The Maragra sugar factory, in the Manhiça district of Maputo province, has suspended its activities following the destruction of machinery due to the rains that caused flooding in February last year.

For the current campaign, the company plans to produce 100,000 tons of sugar cane this season, with the support of its sugar competitor in Xinavane, through a collaboration protocol between the companies.

This is part of an effort to revitalize the sugar industry in Manhiça, so that in the next two years the Maragra sugar mill can resume its activities in full, since the 100,000 tons represent 12% of installed capacity.

"We have an understanding with Xinavane, where the cane that has survived and that is being produced is channeled there for processing," said Paulo Silveira, director of crops at the Maragra sugar mill, quoted by Rádio Moçambique.

Last year, the Maragra sugar mill managed to salvage 50,000 tons of sugar cane.

On the other hand, the rehabilitation of infrastructure destroyed by the rains is underway, such as the reinstallation of the emergency drainage component.

"To date, we've managed to rehabilitate 40% of the dykes. We've already started cleaning the ditches and progressively we're going to install and rehabilitate the electro-mechanical part," he said.
