UK advises against travel to Mozambique from Monday

Reino Unido desaconselha viagens para Moçambique a partir de segunda-feira

The UK is advising British citizens to travel to Mozambique in view of the escalation of post-election protests starting next Monday and in the weeks following the announcement of the results of the general elections on October 9. But it also warns those who are already here to take precautionary measures.

An update from the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) on travel advice warns that the country could experience tense days, characterized by significant disturbances and unrest.

The situation could escalate on the eve of the announcement of the election results, which are expected to take place on December 23rd.

"You should prepare for significant disruptions and disturbances in Mozambique from the week of December 16 onwards and in the weeks following the announcement," it reads.

The note warns that protests and demonstrations will continue in the short term, with the possibility of them starting peacefully and turning violent "with victims".

"Roads and border crossings may be restricted, blocked or closed at short notice. Pay attention to your surroundings, stay away from crowds, monitor local media and be prepared for service and transportation disruptions across the country, which may affect major routes, including those to airports" advises.
