Gas projects: Nyusi says multinationals are waiting for election results

Projectos de Gás: Nyusi diz que multinacionais aguardam desfechos eleitorais

The President of the Republic assumed yesterday that the Liquefied Natural Gas projects in the Rovuma Basin could be affected by the elections in Mozambique and the United States.

Taking stock of his visit to the United States, Filipe Nyusi explained that in electoral contexts, investors tend to be cautious when making decisions.

"In these electoral moments everyone likes to be sure about how things will end and there is a coincidence of moments in Mozambique and here (in the United States)," said Nyusi, quoted in the newspaper "O País".

Nyusi asked people to ask about the future of the gas projects again after the elections next year "so as not to embarrass the politicians".

Regarding the Total Energies project in area 01 of the Rovuma Basin, on which work stopped in 2021, Nyusi explained that the decision to resume could be conditioned by the electoral context. "These projects come with money. And no one knowingly puts money into swampy ground at a time of uncertainty."

The subject of natural gas projects was raised following a meeting that the President of the Republic held this Monday in New York with the Vice-President of the Exxon Mobil oil company involved in the Rovuma Basin Area 4 project.

It is known that Exxon has announced yet another postponement of the announcement of its final investment decision this year, a decision that has been expected since 2020 and has already been postponed several times. On the subject, Exxon Mobil executive Walter Kansteiner informed Filipe Nyusi that the engineering studies for the long-awaited decision will be completed in the next 12 to 13 months.
