Trade between Mozambique and India reached 1.8 billion dollars in 2017/18, according to the High Commissioner of India in Mozambique.
Quoted by Notícias, Ankane Banejee recalled that in the 2011/12 biennium the figure was 634.82 million dollars.
Mozambique's exports to that Asian country continue to increase, with exports reaching 363 million dollars between 2015 and 2016, 546 million dollars between 2016 and 2017, and 926 million dollars between 2017 and 2018, largely due to the increase in coal sales.
In fact, mineral coal is the main product of Indian imports into Mozambique, followed by pulses, cashews and raw materials.
But on the other hand, Indian exports to Mozambique fell from 2.1 billion dollars between 2014 and 2015 to 1.2 billion dollars between 2015 and 2016; between 2016 and 2017 the figure stood at 1 billion dollars; and at 870 million dollars in the 2017/18 biennium. This drop was due to the fall in the price of oil, combined with the currency crisis in Mozambique.
Mozambique's main exports from India are refined petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, textiles and machinery.
He noted that this growth in bilateral trade between the countries was due to the efforts of public and private companies, mainly in the coal sector. And this is the reason why more and more Indian entrepreneurs are looking for investments in Mozambique.
