Nações Unidas reafirmam compromisso de apoiar o fortalecimento dos processos eleitorais em Moçambique

The United Nations reiterates its commitment to continue supporting the strengthening of democracy and electoral processes in Mozambique, with a view to ensuring the transparency, inclusiveness and integrity of electoral processes, as well as the credibility of the entire electoral system and Mozambican institutions.

The confirmation was made this Tuesday (07.03) in Maputo by Myrta Kaulard, United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Mozambique, during a courtesy visit to the National Electoral Commission (CNE).

The main subject of the meeting, which also served to introduce the new UNDP Interim Resident Representative, was the current state of cooperation between the National Electoral Commission and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

The United Nations Resident Coordinator acknowledged the work being carried out by the National Electoral Commission, expressing her satisfaction at the renewal of the partnership with the UNDP, at a time when the project "Strengthening Democracy and Electoral Processes in Mozambique 2022-2025" has made an essential contribution to strengthening democracy and the transparency of electoral processes.

In another development, Ms. Kaulard recalled that the UNDP's electoral project is aligned with the United Nations Cooperation Framework for Sustainable Development in Mozambique between 2022 and 2026, and represents the UN's collective support for the implementation of the Five-Year Government Program (2020 - 2024), Mozambique's National Development Strategy 2015 - 2035, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union's Agenda 2063.

In his speech, the UNDP Acting Resident Representative, Mr. António Molpeceres, highlighted the importance of electoral matters at the United Nations, explaining that the new UNDP electoral project, which will cover the 2022-2025 electoral cycle, follows the formal request for electoral assistance sent by the Government of Mozambique to the UN in 2020.

Speaking during the debates, the President of the National Electoral Commission, His Excellency Dom Carlos Matsinhe, acknowledged the trust and commitment shown by the UNDP electoral project team and stressed that the multifaceted support of the partners is the guarantee of the consolidation of democracy.

"The new electoral project demonstrates UNDP's commitment to supporting and nurturing the processes in Mozambique; we hope that UNDP will assist in mitigating the challenges facing the body by minimizing situations that disrupt the process with a view to conducting and holding free, fair and transparent elections," concluded the President of the Commission.
