The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes the Oscars, has decided to suspend actor Will Smith from all events organized by the academy, including non-face-to-face events, following his unseemly posture at the last Oscars.
"The 94th Academy Awards were supposed to be a celebration of the incredible work done over the past year. However, this ceremony was overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we all saw Will Smith display on stage," reads the Academy statement.
According to the Academy of Oscars, the punitive measure began to count as of this Friday (8) after the Academy Council's decision.
This body had scheduled the decision meeting about the actor's behavior for April 18, but Academy president David Rubin decided to move the meeting forward to yesterday morning, Friday (8), in order to respond "in a timely manner" to Smith's aggressive behavior, who slapped comedian Chris Rock for making a joke about the actor's wife's hair situation.

"The sanctions we are imposing today in response to Will Smith's behavior are a step toward the larger goal of protecting the safety of all performers and guests and rebuilding trust in the Academy. We hope that this may be the beginning of a time of healing for all those involved and who were not indifferent to what happened," continues the statement, which also expresses a "deep gratitude" to Chris Rock who, even in the face of aggression, always maintained his poise and smile.
This move also responds to the actor's resignation to the Academy on April 2.
The Academy also regretted not punishing the actor at the time of the assault. "This was an opportunity for us to set an example to guests, viewers and Academy members around the world, and we fell short. We failed," the note continues.
Despite not being able to attend future events, it is important to remember that the actor is not banned from being nominated or even winning awards during this period. Also the Oscar for best actor given to Smith in the last edition will not be taken away from him, explained the Academy, recalling cases such as Harvey Weinstein and director Roman Polansk, who were convicted and expelled from the Academy and whose awards were never taken away.
