WhatsApp will launch a new feature where it will allow users to leave groups without alerting others about their departure.
These days, leaving a WhatsApp group conversation can be an awkward moment, since everyone in the conversation is informed of the exit. In larger groups, it can also be annoying.
Soon, instead of letting everyone in the group know when someone leaves, only the administrators will be informed. This feature will start rolling out to all WhatsApp users later this month.
The company's latest decision is part of the platform's suite of privacy-enhancing measures. Another tool announced by the company will allow users to hide their presence so that others cannot see that they are online.
WhatsApp is also testing a setting that prevents contacts from retrieving "View Once" messages, which cannot be accessed again after initially opening them.
In a Facebook post this Tuesday, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, which owns WhatsApp, assured that he will "continue to create new ways to protect messages and keep them as private and secure as face-to-face conversations."
"At WhatsApp, we are focused on creating features that help people have more control and privacy over their messages," Ami Vora, WhatsApp's chief product officer, said in a statement quoted by the Economic newspaper.
"Over the years, we've added interconnected layers of protection to help keep conversations safe, and the new features are a way for us to continue to deliver on our commitment to keep messages private," he explained.
