Scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in Sweden today for their discovery of the microRNA molecule, which is responsible for regulating the expression of cells in the body.
American biologists Victor Ambros, 70, and Gary Ruvkun, 72, have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine 2024.
The Nobel committee honored the identification of a new mechanism for regulating cells, post-transcriptional modifications, at the microRNA level to enable the formation of the proteins needed to carry out the various functions in the organism.
The prizes will run until the 14th, when the Economic Sciences prize will be awarded.
Throughout the week, the winners of the Physics (Tuesday), Chemistry (Wednesday), Literature (Thursday) and Peace (Friday) awards will be announced.
The step forward in knowledge taken by Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun does not yet have an immediate application identified, but it is very promising.
According to the Nobel committee, the discovery is important for learning more about embryonic development, human physiology and even tumors, which use microRNA networks to grow.
