"Venâncio Mondlane could be President of Podemos" admits party president

“Venâncio Mondlane pode ser Presidente do Podemos” admite presidente do partido

The president of the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos) said today that there is room for Venâncio Mondlane to lead the political formation as party president.

Meanwhile, Albino Forquilha clarified that this decision will be subject to internal scrutiny by the party's organs, after Mondlane is admitted as a member of the political formation.

"We as the Podemos party will be very open, within the bodies we have, if, for example, Venâncio Mondlane is a member of the party, he could very well be President of the Party, because the bodies will be able to vote in that direction," he said.

The president of Podemos was speaking to journalists a few moments ago, in Maputo City, during a press conference on the opinion of the election results that are being made official and released by the District and Provincial Electoral Commissions.

He hinted that it wasn't part of his playbook to run for office in the political formation founded in 2019.

"My mission is to build this breeding ground for men with some integrity so that they can run this country tomorrow. Venâncio, like anyone else who can carry these values, can be president of Podemos," he said.

He took the opportunity to explain that the fundamental issue that makes the alliance between the party and Venâncio Mondlane is the set of values and principles that they intend to introduce into the country.

"Venâncio Mondlane is not yet a member of the Podemos party. We signed a very good agreement, aimed at guaranteeing the objectives of the Mozambican people, of having a party that is a force to be reckoned with and that will then bring about profound changes in the way we govern our country. It is on this basis that we came together," explained Forquilha, explaining the general lines of the agreement.

The Podemos Party supported the independent candidacy of Venâncio Mondlane for the Presidency of the Republic after the electoral authorities rejected the candidacy of the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD) due to irregularities.

In addition, Forquilha said that once this ongoing process is over, the party is also open to undergoing a restructuring. "There are other mechanisms that the agreement provides for and we will manage them."

Venâncio Mondlane and Albino Forquilha were both members of the Frelimo party who decided to leave the ruling party because they no longer saw themselves in the party's current values.
