PODEMOS presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane and the current mayor of the Beira municipality in Sofala, Albano Carige, have taken to Facebook to say that they are being targeted by death threats.
The denunciations come at a time when the Constitutional Council (CC) is expected to give its position on last October's election results on Monday (23).
According to a DWVenâncio Mondlane, published a scathing text on social media that he described as "My Testament", denouncing alleged political persecution, police violence and then calling it "state terrorism".
"I live across borders, in constant and permanent danger, with an international search and arrest warrant hanging over my head," wrote the PODEMOS presidential candidate.
Mondlane also said he was under pressure from influential figures who offered him privileges in exchange for silence. "People whose size and power is enough to make me disappear with a single breath [...] advise me to accept, in silence, the damage that will be caused by the explosives that will come out of Professor Lúcia's mouth on December 23rd," he said.
For his part, Albano Carige revealed the existence of an alleged death warrant against him, pointing to a member of the police and other people linked to the ruling Frelimo party as responsible.
Both politicians called for a struggle for truth and freedom in the country. Mondlane concluded his speech with a cry of resistance: "This country is ours. Save Mozambique!"
The accusations come against a backdrop of growing tensions, with reports of repression of popular demonstrations and allegations of irregularities in recent elections. So far, the Mozambican authorities have not commented on the serious allegations.
