Presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane said in Inhambane that the revenues generated by the exploitation of natural resources should be used for local development, in order to motivate the population.
Mondlane was speaking from Vilankulo International Airport at the start of his pre-campaign tour of the southern part of the country.
Speaking to the press, Venâncio argued that communities should feel the direct impact of the exploitation of these resources and that one of the ways to do this could be fiscal decentralization.
"What we want is for a large part of the dividends and revenues produced by the projects to be applied, to a large extent, to local projects, and this will allow those who own the resource to be motivated," said Mondlane, quoted by "O País".
He explained that fiscal decentralization is not just about putting money in people's pockets, but about "opening up possibilities for young people and for financing their projects".
He also argues that the companies that exploit the country's wealth should train young Mozambicans so that they can compete on an equal footing with young people from other countries.
"Major projects should not only focus on the purely monetary issue, but should invest heavily in the qualification of youth and the population. This ensures that if the resources run out, we have a prepared population." (Source: O País)
