Venâncio Mondlane calls demonstration to demand CAD's exclusion from electoral race

Venâncio Mondlane convoca manifestação para reivindicar a exclusão da CAD da corrida eleitoral

The candidate for the presidency of the Republic, Venâncio Mondlane, has called a peaceful demonstration for next Wednesday (07) to demand the exclusion by the Constitutional Council (CC) of the candidacy of the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD) for the legislative and provincial assembly elections on October 9.

Speaking today, Sunday (04) at Maputo International Airport, where he landed after a tour of Europe, Venâncio Mondlane considers that democracy and the national justice system are in mourning, accusing "the Constitutional Council and the National Electoral Commission (CNE) of having been instrumentalized by Frelimo, Mozambique's ruling party, to keep CAD out of the electoral race".

Despite the CC's decision, Mondlane stressed that he will go ahead with the presidential elections as a candidate from all social strata and party colors. "They will not stop the Mozambican people," added the politician.

Last Thursday (02), the Constitutional Council put an end to all of the CAD's electoral hopes, confirming the removal that had been ordered by the National Electoral Commission (CNE).

In a ruling on the appeal submitted by the coalition supporting Venâncio Mondlane's presidential candidacy, the seven CC councillors decided to dismiss the coalition.

The body justified the rejection of the appeal and dismissal on the grounds that the CAD had not submitted the agreement for the creation of the new electoral convention to the Ministry of Justice within the time specified by law. As a result, Venâncio Mondlane's candidacy is left "orphaned" of support for the presidential race.
