Vandalization of medium voltage poles leaves 12,000 people in the dark in central region

Vandalização de postes de média tensão deixa 12 mil pessoas às escuras na região centro

At least 12,000 people in the districts of Morrumbala and Dere, in Zambezia province, central Mozambique, are without electricity due to the vandalization of medium voltage poles.

According to the public company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), the case occurred after the collapse of a Medium Voltage Gantry in Chimuara.

"The case has already been reported to the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) for the identification and accountability of the perpetrators," EDM said in a statement, adding that equipment is currently being mobilized to replace the vandalized material and ensure that the normal electricity supply to the affected areas is restored as soon as possible.

In the meantime, EDM regrets the inconvenience this situation is causing to affected customers and the general public, and calls on the community to be vigilant and report any act that undermines the integrity of the electrical infrastructure.

However, the company points out that vandalizing electrical equipment is a crime and delays the achievement of the goal of guaranteeing Universal Access to Energy by 2030.
