The authorities in the northern province of Nampula plan to immunize 3.9 million children under the age of 15 in the current round of polio vaccination.
According to the health authorities in Nampula, mothers, fathers and guardians are pleased that vaccination against polio is also taking place in schools, a disease that in the period between 2021 and 2022 recorded five cases in this part of the country.
The vaccine protects children against infantile paralysis caused by the polio virus.
According to the Secretary of State in Nampula, Jaime Neto, the strategy adopted includes door-to-door vaccination, places with a high concentration of people and schools.
"The action of this virus is characterized by invasion of the peripheral nervous system and can cause paralysis of one or more limbs. Nampula reported five cases of polio between 2021 and 2022 in the districts of Nampula, Meconta, Eráti and Rapale, which have the same genetic link and are considered to be circulating," said Jaime Neto, quoted by AIM.
For this reason, he warned, "we must all be aware that the health and well-being of our children must be looked after without any distinction as to political or religious affiliation or the economic and social situation of each one of them. It is in this context that the entire population is invited to participate massively and effectively in the success of the polio vaccination campaign."
The eighth round of the polio vaccination campaign in Mozambique ends this Sunday and runs under the slogan "Vaccinated Child Healthy Child".
