In a message published on the social network X, the Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, said he had spoken on the phone to the head of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) Laura Ballarín Cereza about the protests against the election results in Mozambique..
"We agree on the need for accountability, respect for the rule of law, transparency and due process in the next stages of the electoral process, calling for political dialogue, restraint and calm on all sides," Borrell wrote on Saturday, in a publication quoted by the VOA.
Unrest has rocked Mozambique since the October 9 elections, which were won by the Frelimo party, in power since 1975, but denounced as fraudulent by the opposition parties.
The main opposition candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, has called for nationwide protests from October 31 to November 7, with a final demonstration planned in Maputo.
On Saturday (02), hundreds of people who had gathered to protest against the election results in Maputo were dispersed by the police with tear gas and rubber bullets, according to AFP reporters at the scene.
Mozambique has imposed internet restrictions since the start of the post-election violence, including blocking access to Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
