European Union announces support of 6.7 million for displaced people in Cabo Delgado

The European Union (EU) will provide 6.7 million euros for the World Food Programme (WFP) to strengthen assistance to populations affected by the armed conflict in Cabo Delgadoannounced this Friday the humanitarian agency.

"The humanitarian situation in northern Mozambique has pushed people to the limit. Those who manage to survive the attacks are forced to leave everything behind, including their livelihoods. Donors like the European Union are essential to help the most vulnerable communities," said Antonella D`Aprile, WFP's representative in Mozambique, in a statement.

The EU contribution will ensure food assistance for 360,000 displaced people, who will benefit from a "food portion consisting of rice, grains and oil, covering 80% of their daily kilocalorie needs," through vouchers with a value of 3,600 meticais for the purchase of food in local markets.

"The value vouchers provide immediate relief for struggling families, while positively impacting the local economy and increasing economic resilience," adds the WFP statement, which also advances that the funds will be used to support other nutrition projects for minors in the north of the country.

Armed groups have terrorized Cabo Delgado province since 2017, with some attacks claimed by the Islamic State group. There are more than 2,800 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, and 732,000 displaced people, according to the United Nations.
