A ministry of culture without culture...

I don't care if Mr. Kuka sang or Valdemiro José sang in Dubai. I don't care who sang and who didn't, I'm just impressed by the childish and dismissive way the Ministry of Culture and Tourism treats our culture. In every corner of the country there are religious ministries that work miracles, and our ministry of culture refuses to learn these techniques to take away the paralysis of our culture.

We have a Ministry of Culture and Tourism that parades around in mediatheques in the city and buys little boxes of pens to sign memorandums that are only good for bouncing around on television footages. A ministry full of culture and political protocols, a ministry of exhibition openings in the capital, a ministry that suits up for national holidays in the capital, a ministry that doesn't know that culture is like an army: it can destroy a country.

In November Paulina Chiziane was at the Dubai Expo. Thanks to the Camões Prize this ministry exhumed Paulina from the tombstone of oblivion. It is a ministry with an excellent culture of forgetfulness, a ministry with perfect tactics to bury the most beautiful makers of our culture.

We have a ministry of culture that calls all the junk that is made in Maputo Mozambican culture, a ministry that spends millennia of the week hopping, like a circus performer, in artists' houses in Maputo. And the artists from other provinces, and the culture-makers from other provinces, dispute the withered nipples of the houses of culture and lap up the little hands of the businessmen like street dogs.

It is sad to see this ministry reduced to a slug that circulates only in Maputo, it is sad, and it is a lack of culture, when a ministry like this becomes a frequent attendant at funerals of artists, only artists from Maputo. The artists who scramble in other provinces end up in mass graves, like David Mazembe. And there is never a peep from the ministry when everything happens outside the capital.
