The prevalence levels of chronic diseases among the adult Mozambican population são alarming, revealed the National Survey on Prevalence and Risk Factors for Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (InCRÓNICA 2024) presented yesterday by the Ministry of Health.
The data shows that one in three adult Mozambicans suffers from high blood pressure; one in 20 adult Mozambicans is diabetic; one in five adults has high cholesterol levels, with a higher incidence among women; obesity indicators have also doubled from 2005 to 2024; sedentary lifestyles and excessive alcohol consumption among young people have also increased.
The main conclusion of the survey is that 17.3% of adults between the ages of 40 and 69 are at high risk of suffering or dying from cardiovascular disease in the next 10 years.
The study, financed to the tune of 1.6 million Canadian dollars by the Government of Canada, had the technical support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and was implemented by the National Institute of Health (INS), in collaboration with the National Institute of Statistics.
