The United Nations Secretary-General's personal envoy to Mozambique, Mirko Manzoni, said that the last base of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) could be closed this month, following the 2019 peace agreement.
"I'm going to talk to the parties. I don't think we'll have any problems and we'll be able to close the base by the end of the month [April]," said Mirko Manzoni, quoted today by Lusa.
António Guterres' special envoy was speaking to journalists at the UN headquarters, where he assured that the conditions are in place for the pacification of the country, according to the Mozambican press.
At issue is the postponement, in December, of the closure of the central base of Renamo's armed wing in the Gorongosa mountains, as part of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) process provided for in the peace agreement signed with the government of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo) in 2019.
Among the main opposition party's complaints are the delays in the pensions due to demobilized guerrillas.
Mirko Manzoni told Lusa on Wednesday that the Mozambican government has the money to pay pensions to the guerrillas.
The Council of Ministers has approved the payment of pensions to former guerrillas from the main opposition party, announced government spokesman Filimão Suaze.
Filimão Suaze said that the armed men of that organization or their descendants will also benefit from disability pensions, survivors' pensions and death benefits.
