Three hundred and forty-seven Renamo officers officially transitioned to civilian life today as part of the closure of Renamo's last military base in the Gorongosa mountains, in Sofala province, by mutual agreement between the parties involved to achieve peace.
The President of Renamo, Ossufo Momade, said during his speech that the closure of this base is undoubtedly the culmination of a long and winding process to the credit of all parties, particularly the combatants who during this time have remained calm, patient and faithful to the call of the Homeland and to our voice of command.
Ossufo Momade also said that the process that has come to an end today opens a new page in the country's history. "From this launch of the DDR we look forward to a new page in our history as a nation," said the Renamo leader, and he didn't stop there.
Ossufo Momade wants to see full compliance with everything that was agreed in order to achieve this end. "We are in favor of a humane and dignified reintegration, which is why we are waiting for the promises of both the government and the international community to be fulfilled so that this end can become a reality."
With the closure of this last base, the Renamo leader hopes to see "the establishment and payment of pensions to our combatants in the next few days and we appeal for there to be no more non-compliance with the agreements we have reached".
The Renamo leader ended his speech by appealing to the demobilized to remain faithful to the ideas of André Matsangaíssa and Afonso Dhlakama and to the Party.
