In a post on Twitter, the Ukrainian foreign ministry urged 34 countries to change the names of the streets where they have Russian embassies and consulates.
The campaign calls for changing the street name to 'Ukraine Street'.
"Living far from Ukraine, it is sometimes difficult to know how to support people under attack. However, there is a way to support Ukraine in spirit," you can read in the site which contains the petitions for each country.
"This would be a simple but significant act of symbolic support for the brave Ukrainian people who defend the values of freedom and democracy from one of the strongest military powers in the world," they write. In the text, it is said that Russia "seems to forget that Ukraine is a sovereign state."
Several European countries have already changed the address signs of Russian embassies to the name Ukraine. Albania changed part of a street to 'Free Ukraine Street', Lithuania renamed a street to 'Ukrainian Heroes Street', and Latvia to 'Independent Ukraine Street'.
Countries like Denmark, Ireland, and Poland have already reiterated intentions to make changes to their street names.
According to the most recent data, the war has already caused 10 million people to flee, including more than 3.8 million refugees in neighboring countries and nearly 6.5 million internally displaced persons. The UN estimates that some 13 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in Ukraine.
