AU says closure of Renamo base is "huge contribution" to silencing arms in Africa

UA diz que fecho de base da Renamo é “enorme contributo” para calar armas em África

The chairman of the African Union (AU) commission, Chadian Moussa Faki Mahamat, believes that the closure of Renamo's last base in Mozambique will make a huge contribution to silencing the guns on the African continent.

Chadian Moussa Faki Mahamat revealed this information on Sunday in a statement posted on the pan-African organization's social networks.

Moussa Faki Mahamat welcomed the closure, on June 15, in Gorongosa, Sofala province, Mozambique, of the last military base of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), underlining "the tremendous contribution on the road to silencing the guns in Africa".

Quoted by Lusa, Moussa Faki Mahamat wrote that: "the demobilization of the last former Renamo combatants is a true demonstration of the determination of the government of Mozambique and Renamo for sustainable peace, reconciliation, reintegration and development."

The AU president praised Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi "for his leadership, devotion and commitment to building trust and promoting reconciliation and tolerance among Mozambicans," as well as Renamo leader Ossufo Momade's "commitment to having honoured all the obligations agreed during the process" of demilitarization.

Moussa Faki Mahamat also renewed the African Union's commitment to supporting "Mozambican efforts to promote peace, security and stability" in the country.

The last Renamo base was closed in Vanduzi, Gorongosa district, in the central province of Sofala, on Thursday, more than 30 years after the end of the Mozambican civil war.

The ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, and the leader of Renamo, Ossufo Momade.

The closure of Renamo's 16th base is part of the Maputo Agreement for Peace and National Reconciliation, signed in August 2019.
