Twitter has dismantled its Brussels office, which is raising fears among European Union (EU) officials about whether the social network will comply with new rules on online content, the FT reports today, quoted by Lusa.
These executives had been at the forefront of the company's efforts to comply with the EU's disinformation code and with the European bloc's Digital Services Act, which came into force last week and details new rules on how tech giants must keep users safe online.
In addition, the FT points out that other Twitter executives in the Brussels office left their posts at the beginning of the month as part of executive cuts by the technology company, which laid off half of its workforce.
According to the British daily, the departures from the Brussels office reveal a global trend ranging from India to France, in which local Twitter executives who held key positions in negotiations with government officials are abruptly leaving the organization.
This has raised growing concerns about whether the company has the staff to ensure compliance with local laws relating to online content.
Speaking to the FT, Vera Jourová, in the EU vice-presidency responsible for the disinformation code, expressed "concern at the news of the dismissal of such a large number of Twitter employees in Europe" and stressed that if you want to "effectively detect and adopt measures against disinformation and propaganda, this requires resources".
In particular, "in the context of the Russian disinformation war, I expect Twitter to fully respect EU law and honor its commitments. Twitter has been a very useful partner in the fight against disinformation and hate speech and that must not change," he said.
On October 28, tycoon Elon Musk confirmed the purchase of Twitter.
