Trump and Putin to meet this week to discuss war

Trump e Putin deverão reunir-se esta semana para discutir guerra

The US envoy to Russia said yesterday that US President Donald Trump will meet "this week" with Vladimir Putin to discuss the situation in Ukraine, reports AFP.

"There's still a lot to discuss, but I think the two presidents are going to have a very good and positive discussion this week," said Steve Witkoff, speaking to CNN, adding that Moscow, Kiev and Washington "want this all to end".

On Friday, the Kremlin said that Vladimir Putin had delivered a message to Donald Trump about the US envoy's proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine.

"When Mr. Witkoff provides all the information to President Trump, we will determine the time for a conversation" between the two presidents, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at the time.

Ukraine agreed to a 30-day unconditional truce if Russia stopped its attacks in the east of the country.

However, Vladimir Putin did not agree to any truce and decided to set maximalist conditions, such as Ukraine ceding five regions annexed by Russia, abandoning Kiev's ambitions to join NATO and dismantling the Ukrainian government in place.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described his telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as "promising".

"It's difficult to negotiate a lasting end to a war while the belligerents are shooting at each other, and that's why President [Trump] wants a ceasefire," continued the US Secretary of State.

Steve Witkoff, Donald Trump's special envoy, arrived in Moscow on Thursday to present the Russians with the US plan for a 30-day truce in the conflict in Ukraine, after more than three years of war caused by the Russian invasion. (NM)
