On Sunday (05), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) held a virtual Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Troika of the Organ to discuss the Post-Electoral Political and Security Situation in the Republic of Mozambique.
The Summit noted with concern the deterioration of the post-election political and security situation in the Republic of Mozambique, including the socio-economic impact on the country and the adverse effects on the supply chains of essential goods.
SADC mandated the Panel of Leaders, supported by the Troika member states of the Organ's Ministerial Committee (MCO), namely Malawi, Zambia and the United Republic of Tanzania, and the SADC Secretariat, to engage with the Government of Mozambique and the main opposition leaders on the post-electoral environment in Mozambique and report back to the Chairperson of the SADC Organ by January 15, 2025.
The Chairperson of the SADC Organ, Samia Suluhu Hassan, stressed that SADC could not afford to ignore what is happening in the Republic of Mozambique, especially when it has a direct impact on the socio-economic fabric of the entire SADC region.
The political and security situation in Mozambique is not only affecting the Mozambican people, but also hampering regional trade in critical sectors such as energy and transport, said the outgoing President of the Organ, Hakainde Hichilema.
Mozambique's next president is due to take office on January 15. The Constitutional Council has legitimized Daniel Chapo, Frelimo's candidate. Venâncio Mondlane claims victory, and has unleashed a wave of protests since October 21, 2024.
