The South African court in Thembisa has legalized the arrest of Esmael Nangy, a Mozambican national, who was detained in that country following an international arrest warrant issued by the national authorities. Nangy is accused by the courts of being connected to crimes of kidnapping, criminal association and money laundering.

In a statement quoted by Noticias online, the Central Office for Combating Organized and Transnational Crime (GCCCOT) said that an extradition request to Mozambique was being processed in parallel.

In a separate case, the GCCCOT brought charges against four defendants in pre-trial detention for the crimes of kidnapping, criminal association and money laundering. The case has already been referred to the Maputo City Judicial Court.

The accused were arrested following an investigation into a kidnapping that took place in June 2022, in Rua das Rosas, Polana-Caniço neighborhood, Maputo city, in which the victim was a Mozambican businessman. (News)
