Thirteen people died in rail accidents in the south of the country

Treze pessoas morreram vítimas de acidentes ferroviários no Sul do país

Thirteen people died as a result of rail accidents on the country's southern lines between January and September this year. During this period, the company Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) incurred losses of more than two million dollars due to the theft and vandalization of railway equipment.

Most of the accidents were caused by distraction, the use of headphones and pedestrians not crossing properly.

In fact, the CFM is carrying out awareness-raising campaigns to make rail service users and the surrounding communities aware of the dangers and precautions in railway areas.

Cited by Radio MozambiqueArnaldo Manjate, Director of Railway Operations at CFM in the southern region, said that the company's effort with the campaign is to "zero out" railway accidents.

"What we want is for there to be zero deaths. If we look at last year's occurrences and compare them with this year, we can see that there has been a reduction. But we don't want a reduction. We want to zero, to make our 100% rail operation safe," he said.

Regarding financial losses, he noted that they also have a negative influence on the trust that partners place in the company.

He was speaking on the sidelines of yesterday's launch of rail safety week.
