The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, said that from 2020 onwards, three million people will have access to drinking water.

He was speaking at an annual meeting of the water sector, which took place this Monday in Maputo City, where he shared some data on the water supply situation in the country.
In global terms, he revealed that the population currently covered by safe water supply is more than 20.7 million people, and by sanitation around 13 million people.
The minister also says that the gains achieved have reduced the number of people traveling miles in search of the precious liquid.
"We are pleased to note that with the expansion of water supply services to rural areas, there is a growing tendency for people to opt for water in their homes, to the detriment of water sources, significantly reducing the distances traveled by the population in search of the precious liquid," he said.
The government promises to invest in the construction of water retention systems in semi-arid areas, as a way of preventing the impacts of the drought in the coming months.
