Informal business in Mozambique is practiced by about three million children, according to the results of a survey by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), revealed by the National Director of Sectoral Statistics at INE, Adriano Matsinhe.
"We found in this survey 2.7 million children in informal sector activities, in which 81% attended elementary school and unfortunately 16% never attended school" said Matsinhe, quoted, today, by Radio Mozambique, regarding the publication of the results of the informal sector survey in 2021.
The INE survey also revealed that nearly half of Mozambican citizens engage in informal activities. That is, of the nearly 30 million people nationwide, 13 million engage in informal business. The agricultural sector absorbs 80% of the total.
Most of the 13 million people are, in descending order, in the provinces of Nampula, Zambezia, and Tete. "These three provinces together concentrate 48% of the people working in the informal sector."
By 2021, the informal sector contributed 45 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the source concluded.
