River overflow floods more than 15,000 hectares of agricultural crops in Gaza province

Several hectares of various crops, especially corn, have been flooded in the districts of Chibuto, Guijá and Chókwè, Gaza province, following the overflow of some rivers that cross that region of the country.

The situation, according to the authorities, is affecting at least 22,000 people in the three districts, who already fear that they could face "food shortages in the near future".

Cornfields have suffered the most, leaving families in despair.

Since the beginning of the year, several riverside towns in the districts of Magude, in Maputo, and Magude, in Gaza, have faced flooding and the Regional Water Administration of the South (ARA-Sul) has been appealing to the population to take precautionary measures when going to the Maputo, Incomati and Limpopo rivers, at the risk of being swept away by the force of the water.

Meanwhile, data from the institution indicates that between Monday and Wednesday, there was weak and scattered rain in the hydro-climatological observation network in the south of the country, placing the Limpopo, Sicacate, Combomune, Pafuri and Chókwè rivers; Incomati and Maputo, Madubula, above the alert level.
