Meta's new social network Threads registered ten million subscribers within just seven hours of going live. This was revealed by the founder of the social network Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg.
"We just surpassed ten million registrations in the first seven hours," wrote Zuckerberg in a post on the official Threads account.
Meta, which owns the social networks Instagram and Facebook and the mobile messaging and calling app WhatsApp, wants to dethrone Twitter with this new social network.
According to Lusa, Threads became available in 100 countries from 00:00 this Thursday, but not in European Union (EU) countries and on smartphones with Android operating systems.
Meanwhile, Instagram leader Adam Mosseri lamented that Threads is not yet available in the EU, explaining that if Meta had to wait for approval from Brussels, the launch would have been delayed by many months.
The launch of Threads was originally scheduled for 15:00 this Thursday, but has been brought forward by the company to 00:00.
According to Mark Zuckerberg, among the celebrities who have joined the new social network are Colombian singer Shakira, British chef Gordon Ramsay and American actor Jack Black.
In addition to celebrities, entertainment and media giants such as Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter magazines, HBO television and the Netflix platform also have Threads accounts, as does US public radio station National Public Radio (NPR).
The launch of Threads comes after Elon Musk announced on Saturday a limit on the number of Twitter messages that can be viewed per account per day, a decision criticized by users and advertisers of the social network.
On Monday, Twitter also announced that the TweetDeck panel, which is very popular with the most active users, will soon only be accessible to paid accounts.
