The Transport Association of Tete (ATROTE) says that hauliers are suffering losses due to traffic restrictions on the Samora Machel bridge. The President of ATROTE warns of possible problems if the situation prevails.

"The carriers are not collecting their revenue because at some point they get stuck in a queue or don't unload the passengers at the desired point," said Ambrósio Sadique, quoted by Rádio Moçambique.

According to the President of ATROTE, many hauliers have abandoned the inter-district routes this rainy season because of the poor road conditions.

"We are dismayed at the moment because there are delays for employees and some people with businesses," he lamented.

ATROTE is calling on the authorities responsible for traffic on the Samora Machel bridge to make the work more flexible and to allow large vehicles to pass, as there is a risk of serious problems.

"ATROTE recommends that whoever is entitled to do so, whether ANE, the Zambezi Highway, or the public works, urgently repairs the bridge over the Zambezi River to minimize the constraints because there could be serious problems on the bridge," he warned.

Traffic on the bridge was interrupted for several hours. It was reopened at 6pm to allow vehicles to circulate until 10pm.

In a statement this Thursday, the National Roads Administration said that the work could be completed today.
