A delegate from a polling station in Chitima, in the Cahora-Bassa district of Tete, tried to set fire to a ballot box last night after suspecting that polling station staff had tried to stuff it with ballot papers of dubious origin.
Without giving the name of the party she belongs to, the spokesman for the Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM) in Tete, Feliciano da Câmara, said, quoted by the newspaper Domingo, that the police intervened and took measures to impose order at the scene.
"She was not arrested because she was an important element in the process," the spokesman added.
In general, however, the spokesman described the 24-hour "Planet 5" operation, implemented to ensure order and security at the polls, as orderly and peaceful.
