Tesla will repair 129,960 cars due to a problem with screens

Some129,960 Tesla vehicles in the United States will be repaired due to a problem with touchscreens that causes them to overheat and can cause them to no longer display information important to the operation of the car.

According to Noticias ao Minuto, the affected models are the Model S and Model X from the 2021 and 2022 model years, and the Model 3 and Model Y from 2022.

Tesla also informed the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that during the fast charging process, the central processing unit (CPU) of the infotainment system may not cool down enough.

According to the manufacturer, overheating can cause the CPU to slow down or the system to reboot, causing the screen to not work properly or not display any information.

A malfunctioning display renders the rear camera image and other information critical to car operation, such as steering modes and windshield visibility control settings, which can increase the risk of a collision.

To fix the defect, Tesla will remotely update the 'software' on the cars for free to improve CPU temperature management.

Already last year, the US federal authorities launched an investigation into whether 600,000 Tesla vehicles allowed video games to be played on the screens while the cars were in motion. The NHTSA considered that the function could distract the driver and increase the risk of an accident because video games are visible from the driver's seat on the car's touch screen.
