Belgian tennis player wins second Future of the 10th edition of the Standard Bank Open

The Belgian tennis player Tibo Colson is the winner of the second Future of the tenth edition of the Standard Bank Open, in men's singles, after defeating, Sunday, October 16th, at the Tunduru Garden courts, the South African Dylan Salton by two sets to nil (6-3, 6-3), in a match that lasted one hour and 11 minutes.

In Top Moz, a competition for players residing in Mozambique, Jaime Sigaúque defeated his brother, Armando Sigaúque, 6-4, 6-2, to become champion in the men's singles category. In women's singles, Ana Vassilis won the competition, beating Ohmar Fernandes 6-2, 6-4.

In the senior B category, the duo António Sábado and Sharif Ahmed beat Vitorino Nhabangue and Chris Buck by 6/2 and 6/1. In singles, José Gonçalves beat Luís Almeida by 6/3 and 6/4.

With 22 years of age, this is the first time that Tibo Colson reaches a final of a Future and that he also wins a title. The athlete is currently ranked 847th by the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) and 39th by the ITF (International Tennis Federation).

"It's my first title. It was my first final and I couldn't be happier. I would be overjoyed even if I had lost. I congratulate the organization and the sponsor for the quality of the race. We had many good athletes, besides a spectacular public," he said.

This match marked the end of the tenth edition of the race, which earned a positive evaluation from the managing director of Standard Bank, Bernardo Aparício, who was proud to contribute to the promotion and growth of the sport in the country.

"We have a positive balance, because we were able to watch very competitive and high quality matches. For us, it is a great pride to bring this level of competition to Mozambique. The Standard Bank Open, which has the Futures component, is an event that is on the ITF calendar. We will continue to support the sport, in particular, and the sport in general", he stressed.

On the occasion, the Secretary of State for Sports, Carlos Gilberto Mendes, congratulated Standard Bank for the support it has given to sports, and considered that the fact that Mozambique has organized this competition for 10 years shows that the country can be part of the "tennis family" worldwide.

"It is an event that makes us proud as a country. Congratulations to Standard Bank that, once again, embraced the sport in the best way and at the highest level, and for providing us the opportunity to watch high quality tennis matches", stressed Carlos Gilberto Mendes.

The vice-president of the Mozambican Tennis Federation (FMT), Virgílio Tivane, was happy that the country was hosting an event of this dimension: "Two years after, without international competitions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we had tennis players from all over the world competing at the highest level.

It is worth mentioning that on Saturday, October 15th, the final of the second Future in men's doubles took place, with the duo Oleksandr Bielinskyi (Ukraine) and Palaphoom Kovapitukted (Thailand) defeating Tibo Colson (Belgium) and Emmett Ward (USA), by two sets to nil (6-2, 6-2).
